If the protection tab is removed I don't think you can physically press the Rec button down?Hey guys! Sorry about the delayed response! Yes the problem had something to do with that. So yea! I'm way past frustrated and considering throwing this thing out of a window, but I just thought I'd post my experience here, to see if anyone has any ideas. He said to take it home and try again and sure enough, I did and in my house the goddamned thing IS STILL NOT WORKING! I asked if the current of our houses could have something to do with it but he said that didn't make much sense since machines like the 488 usually have some kind of way of regulating their power. In his house the REC button worked every single time! He said he had no idea of what could it be since, after he switched the button, every time the machine was tested with him it worked. To my amusement, as soon as we got there and turned the machine one, we tried to record something and it was just as if it was working all along. I called the guy who fixed it and went there to troubleshoot the thing. I went there and he showed me that the machine was now operational! Awesome! Except that when I got home, the same old REC button still didn't work!!! "Maybe I'm not doing it right!" I thought, so I tried everything, pressing REC and PLAY, pressing PLAY and then REC, trying to arm the tracks after pressing PLAY, pressing PLAY then PAUSE then REC and just every combo of keys I could think of and still no red light, no stopped blinking of the armed tracks, nothing. He found out that the REC button mas short circuited so he put a new one.
I armed the tracks like I did on my 424, I switched the selector in the tracks to mic/line, but the friggin' REC button was dead. Everything else worked fine, but the REC didn't work. Apparently everything was ok and the equipment was working fine, but when it got home the REC button just didn't work. I bought a used Tascam Portastudio 488 mkII from a guy that made a video recording from it. OK, so I'm getting beyond frustrated with this thing.
